In order to make the engineering sector more globally responsible we are proposing to design a tool/visual framework, inspired by the Business Model Canvas. The tool will facilitate ensuring that engineering products and services are accessible and inclusive of all users and are as free as possible from discrimination and bias. It will also be applicable across any project or design to ensure consideration, alignment and future proofing in line with sustainable/responsible engineering. The tool and its alignment with principles and industry sustainability ambitions is intended to be simple, effective, easy to mobilise, cost-effective, accessible and scalable (i.e. ranging from school STEM challenge project to power plants and other large-scale engineering projects). This will enable the reshaping of existing practices and will enable even further long-lasting entrepreneurship.
Engineers Without Borders is well placed to develop and deploy tools such as this, given the far reach and strong reputation of the organisation.
The tool may include (but is not limited to) the following topics:
1. Putting People at the Heart of Solutions
2. Ethics
3. Global Responsibility and Appropriate Technology
4. Future Technology
5. Societal Impact
6. Sustainable Development Goals
7. Safety and Cyber Security
8. The Natural Environment

Hi Mark,
Great! Once you have discussed it with the team, I would be happy to join any calls if that would be helpful.
All the best and looking forward to hearing from you,
Reena
Hi Reena, Thanks for your questions and thoughts! I also think it will be a good idea to discuss this in a video chat with the team. I will contact the team members first via email. Later come back to you with proposal. Best regards, Mark
Hi Team!
Great that you would like to create a design tool that captures all these important elements.
I had some questions and thoughts around the following:
*In the Business Model Canvas the nine boxes are grouped in a specific way to support the relations between the boxes – is that intended also here? If yes: are all mentioned points related in this way?
*Could you combine/expand on the Business Model Canvas to include these extra elements that have been proposed? Is it possible to include the topics in the standard process of business models?
*Are the topics in order of priority of what is required? Which out of the 8 mentioned are needed the most?
* How is the tool is intended to be used? i.e. who uses it, in which situation, in what stage of a project, and with what focus.
*In what way do you envisage it creating meaningful discussion between different stakeholders?
*How would the tool be funded? Would users need to pay to access it?
* How will the tool ensure that engineered products and services are accessible and inclusive of all users and are as free as possible from discrimination and bias?
In terms of communication, if you have any questions or comments then we can continue to talk on this platform or I'm happy to have a video call.
Warm wishes,
Reena
